Cake for friend. Makes me laugh.
Here are some of his friends. They are pretty cute. I hope to actually have all of these webkinz to give to her for her birthday. Should be fun. I need to pick a craft for the party!!
I have now three cakes in the making. I can’t believe it!! This is going to merit finally generating a price structure. So, here are the cakes:
- Confirmation cake for a teenager who just got onto the varsity soccer team at our local high school
- Webkinz cake for my daughter turning seven
- A baby shower cake for a couple who just adopted a little boy
Here is the plan. Next weekend is the soccer/high school cake. Our local High School’s mascot is the Huskey, the colors are burnt orange and navy blue. My plan is to make an 8 inch, two layer yellow cake filled with chocolate ganache. The frosting will be a buttercream merangue in navy blue. I had to figure out how to make the paw print of the huskey on top of the cake. So here’s what I did:
Drew the outline of a paw print on a piece of heavy posterboard. I thought about purchasing stencil sheets, but they were very expensive and would have really jacked up the price of the cake. I used and exacto knife from home to make a stencil.
Then I melted orange and red white chocolate together and spread it over the stencil to make the basic outline. What I ended up with looked like this:
I do like the way the paw print turned out. The side that is on the bottom and smooth will become the top. But, I decided to take it a step further. Since he is such a soccer buff, I thought some soccer balls on the cake would be great. So, I made these soccer ball pops that I will stick into the edge of the cake. The cake is due next weekend, I am excited to see how it turns out.
Yum, baked this today for a girlie get together tonight. Just sampled one if the apples! Pie recipe http://www.cakeduchess.com/2011/04/salted-caramel-apple-pie.html
My husband is a hero. He more often than not is the parent running around in the morning making lunches, dressing the kids, and dealing with the general chaos that 6:45 am brings. I guess then that I have little right to comment on morning cuisine choices. I try to bite my tongue most days. Today though, I had to say something. Ice cream cake? The Cosby family reinvented.
A few weeks ago, my good friend virtual farm girl was beginning to plan her daughter’s birthday party. Being who I am I was very curious to learn about the cake! At that point she didn’t have a plan, bit knew she wanted an angry birds cake. I felt up to the challenge though had no idea what to do, but I volunteered to bake the cake. Tonight was my first experience with gum paste. We’ll see what they look like tomorrow. I think it’s a good start.
I hear you thought I retired and now bake cakes for a living. Not quite…I still work full time and bake cakes for people (some who retire). In the very near future. I’d like to start baking for a fee. Probably still won’t be able to retire. 🙂 You are awesome.
